Othello

For those of you who don't have the program(me), the Artistic Director for The Globe, Emma Rice, speaks of her trepidation in taking on Othello and of the importance of treating Shakespeare "as a new play."

As we talked about, the Restoration theatres adapted Shakespeare because audiences had a different sense of justice, thought the language outdated and unsophisticated, and the plays too messy.  Yet they held Shakespeare in reverence, thanks to Dryden's Essay of Dramatick Poesie, 1668, and ongoing veneration of the playwright.  In the 18th century, the actor, playwright, theatre manager David Garrick helped to establish has Bard status.
